Solidsampling is the process of obtaining a representative sample from a solid material for laboratory analysis, quality control, or regulatory compliance. It covers bulk solids such as ores, grains, powders, pellets, foods, and pharmaceutical ingredients. The goal is to characterize the material’s average composition and properties despite inherent heterogeneity and possible segregation during handling, storage, and processing.

Representativeness and sampling plans are central. Because solids often vary in composition and particle size, sampling aims to minimize bias and variability. Methods include random, systematic, stratified, and composite sampling. A primary sample is drawn from the bulk or stream, secondary samples are collected from containers or batches, and a final analytical sample is prepared by reduction and homogenization.

Techniques and equipment range from grab sampling with scoops, probes, and augers to crown-and-splitters such as riffle dividers, cone-and-quartering devices, and rotary sample dividers. For powders, conical dividers and proper mixing are used to avoid segregation; core samplers and probing rigs are common for challenging materials.

Processing and quality assurance include documenting the sampling plan, selecting appropriate sample sizes, reducing and homogenizing subsamples, and sealing the final sample to preserve integrity. Documentation, labeling, and chain-of-custody are essential. Standard practices are informed by ISO, ASTM, USP, and other national or industry-specific guidelines.

Applications span mining, cement, chemicals, food production, pharmaceuticals, and environmental testing. Challenges include avoiding cross-contamination, preventing segregation, moisture and temperature changes, and safety risks from dust. Effective solidsampling relies on validated procedures, trained personnel, and adherence to relevant standards to produce reliable analytical results.
