Soilless culture, also known as hydroponics or soilless cultivation, refers to a method of growing plants without using soil as the growing medium. Instead, plant roots are supported by inert materials or directly suspended in nutrient-rich water solutions. This approach offers several advantages over traditional soil-based agriculture, including precise control over nutrient delivery, reduced water usage through recirculation, and the potential for higher crop yields in controlled environments.

Various systems fall under the umbrella of soilless culture. Deep water culture (DWC) involves suspending plant roots directly in a nutrient solution, often with aeration. Nutrient film technique (NFT) circulates a thin film of nutrient solution over the plant roots, which are typically held in channels. Drip systems deliver nutrient solution directly to the base of each plant, often using an inert substrate like rockwool, coco coir, or perlite for root support. Aeroponics takes this a step further by misting plant roots with nutrient solution, providing excellent oxygenation.

Soilless cultivation is particularly beneficial in areas with poor soil quality, limited arable land, or where water scarcity is a concern. It allows for year-round production, independent of external weather conditions, and can be implemented in vertical farms or greenhouses, maximizing space utilization. While it requires careful management of nutrient solutions and pH levels, soilless culture represents a significant innovation in sustainable and efficient plant production.
