The town traces its origins to the 11th century, when a castle and a small settlement were established to guard the valley. The name Sognetto is thought to derive from the nearby Sogna River and the Italian diminutive suffix -etto.

Sognetto covers about 32 square kilometers in the foothills of the Monti Sereni, at elevations between 180 and 620 meters. The climate is temperate, with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters.

The municipality is administered by a mayor and a 12-member council. As of 2023, the population is around 3,100, with a stable age structure and modest growth in recent years. The frazioni include Corte Alta and Valle Nera.

Notable sites include the 12th-century Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the 13th-century Castle of Sognetto. The annual Festa della Vendemmia celebrates the harvest with markets, music, and tastings.

The town operates an elementary and middle school and a technical institute. It is connected by regional roads and has a local railway station on the Veridian Rail network, with regular services to nearby towns.
