Smalbåndskommunikasjon, often translated as narrow-band communication, refers to a type of radio communication that uses a very limited portion of the radio frequency spectrum. This contrasts with wideband communication, which utilizes a much larger bandwidth. The key characteristic of smalbåndskommunikasjon is its highly focused transmission within a narrow frequency channel.

The primary advantage of smalbåndskommunikasjon is its efficiency in spectrum usage. By occupying a small bandwidth, it allows for more users or channels to coexist within the same overall radio spectrum. This makes it particularly valuable in situations where spectrum is scarce. Another benefit is its resilience to interference, as the narrow signal is less susceptible to noise and jamming from other sources operating on different frequencies. Furthermore, smalbåndskommunikasjon often requires less power for transmission compared to wideband systems, leading to longer battery life in portable devices.

However, the limited bandwidth also imposes restrictions. The data rates achievable with smalbåndskommunikasjon are typically much lower than those of wideband systems. This means it is not suitable for applications requiring high-speed data transfer, such as streaming video or large file downloads.
