A slit lamp is a specialized binocular microscope equipped with a high-intensity light source that allows for a magnified, stereoscopic view of the eye's external and internal structures. Ophthalmic professionals, including ophthalmologists, optometrists, and orthoptists, use slit lamps as a primary diagnostic tool for examining the health of the eye. The microscope provides detailed visualization of the eyelid, lashes, conjunctiva, cornea, anterior chamber, iris, and lens.

The illumination system is crucial, projecting a narrow beam of light that can be adjusted in width, height, and angle. This focused beam creates a "slit" image of the tissue, allowing for examination of its depth and texture. By varying the slit's dimensions and the microscope's magnification, different structures can be analyzed with remarkable clarity.

Common uses of the slit lamp include diagnosing conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, dry eye syndrome, corneal abrasions, and various inflammatory or infectious diseases of the eye. It is also used to assess the fit of contact lenses and to monitor the progression of ocular diseases. The examination is typically non-invasive and painless for the patient. Often, fluorescein dye is instilled into the eye to highlight any irregularities on the corneal surface, which are then visualized under the slit lamp with a cobalt blue filter.
