Skuldabyrði, also known as "debt slavery" or "debt bondage," refers to a historical and contemporary system where individuals are compelled to work to repay debts, often under conditions resembling slavery. This practice has been documented in various cultures and time periods, though it has been particularly prevalent in societies with rigid class structures or economic disparities.

In historical contexts, skuldabyrði was common in agrarian economies where peasants or laborers borrowed money or goods from landowners or moneylenders. Due to high interest rates, crop failures, or other economic hardships, borrowers frequently found themselves unable to repay their debts in full. As a result, they and their families were sometimes forced to work for the creditor until the debt was satisfied, effectively becoming bound laborers. This system was particularly noted in medieval Europe, where serfdom and debt peonage were widespread.

Skuldabyrði persists in some modern forms, particularly in regions with weak labor protections or informal economies. In certain parts of the world, individuals may enter into exploitative labor contracts where wages are insufficient to cover living expenses, trapping them in cycles of debt. This can occur in industries such as domestic work, construction, or agriculture, where workers are often paid below minimum wage or denied legal protections.

Critics of skuldabyrði argue that it perpetuates systemic inequality by disempowering vulnerable populations and reinforcing cycles of poverty. Legal and humanitarian efforts have sought to address these practices through labor reforms, debt relief programs, and international human rights frameworks. Organizations such as the International Labour Organization (ILO) have condemned forced labor and debt bondage as violations of fundamental human rights.
