Skiktsvisur is a traditional form of Icelandic poetry that originated in the 15th century. The name "skiktsvisur" literally translates to "suitable verses" or " proper poems", which refers to the specific conventions and forms they adhere to.

Skiktsvisur consists of two-line stanzas with a consistent rhyme scheme, typically with a six-syllable first line and a seven-syllable second line. The meter and syllable count are also carefully regulated, adding to the form's rigid structure. Verses often address love, nature, and the passing of time, with a focus on capturing the fleeting moments of life.

One of the defining characteristics of skiktsvisur is their use of metaphor and wordplay. Poets would often rely on layers of meaning, using metaphors to convey complex emotions and ideas in a condensed and expressive manner. The result is a unique blend of concrete and abstract imagery that lends itself to interpretation.

Skiktsvisur were an integral part of Icelandic literary culture, particularly during the Age of Settlement (c. 870-1262). Despite the limited availability of survived examples, the form's influence can be seen in the development of later Icelandic poetic traditions. The works of known skiktsvisur poets include Åsmunder Jörundsson and Grímur Jónsson.
