Skeletal muscles are classified into two main types based on their function: agonist and antagonist. Agonist muscles are responsible for the primary movement, while antagonist muscles oppose the action of the agonist muscles. For example, in the bicep and tricep muscles of the arm, the bicep is the agonist muscle that flexes the elbow, while the tricep is the antagonist muscle that extends the elbow.

Skeletal muscles are also responsible for generating heat, which is essential for maintaining body temperature. This process is known as thermogenesis. Additionally, skeletal muscles play a crucial role in the metabolism of nutrients, particularly carbohydrates and fats, by providing the necessary energy for physical activity.

Skeletal muscles are subject to various types of stress, including tension, compression, and shear. These stresses can lead to muscle fatigue, injury, or even muscle atrophy if not properly managed. Regular exercise and proper nutrition are essential for maintaining the health and function of skeletal muscles.
