Skeletilihaksissa, often referred to as skeletal muscles, are one of the three major types of muscle tissue in the body, alongside smooth muscle and cardiac muscle. They are voluntary muscles, meaning their contraction is consciously controlled by the nervous system. Skeletal muscles are attached to bones by tendons, and their primary function is to enable movement of the skeleton.

These muscles are characterized by their striated appearance under a microscope, which is due to the regular arrangement of contractile proteins called actin and myosin. Each skeletal muscle fiber is a long, cylindrical cell containing multiple nuclei. Contraction occurs when a signal from a motor neuron triggers a cascade of events within the muscle fiber, leading to the sliding of actin and myosin filaments past each other, shortening the muscle.

Skeletal muscles are responsible for a wide range of actions, from gross motor movements like walking and running to fine motor skills such as writing and playing a musical instrument. They also play a role in maintaining posture and generating heat. Muscle tone, a state of partial contraction even at rest, is maintained by skeletal muscles and is crucial for stability and readiness for action. The body contains hundreds of skeletal muscles, working in coordinated groups to produce complex movements.
