Skarlátbetegség, also known as scarlet fever, is an infectious disease that primarily affects children. It is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes, the same bacteria that causes strep throat. The illness is characterized by a distinctive red rash that often feels like sandpaper.

The disease typically begins with symptoms similar to strep throat, including a sore throat, fever, headache, and sometimes vomiting. Within 12 to 48 hours of the initial symptoms, a characteristic rash appears, usually starting on the neck and chest and spreading to the rest of the body. The rash is often described as pink or red and feels rough to the touch. The tongue may also develop a white coating that later turns red, giving it a "strawberry tongue" appearance.

Skarlátbetegség is spread through respiratory droplets, typically when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Close contact with an infected individual is the most common way to contract the illness. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent complications.

Penicillin is the standard antibiotic treatment for skarlátbetegség. Prompt treatment with antibiotics helps to alleviate symptoms, reduce the duration of the illness, and prevent more serious complications such as rheumatic fever or kidney disease. Good hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing and avoiding close contact with sick individuals, are crucial in preventing the spread of the infection.
