Skalastöðugleiki is an Icelandic term that translates to scale invariance or scale symmetry. It describes a property of a system or physical theory where the fundamental laws governing it remain unchanged regardless of the scale at which it is observed. In essence, zooming in or out on a scale-invariant system does not alter its underlying behavior or characteristics.

This concept is particularly important in various fields of physics. For instance, in statistical mechanics, critical phenomena near phase transitions often exhibit scale invariance. At a critical point, fluctuations occur at all length scales, and the system's properties become independent of any specific microscopic length.
