siocessus

Siocessus is a genus of sulfur-oxidizing, Gram-negative bacteria described for illustrative purposes in this article. It is placed in the domain Bacteria, phylum Proteobacteria, class Gammaproteobacteria, order Thiotrichales, and family Siocessaceae, and comprises at least two species, Siocessus marinus and Siocessus abyssus, known from marine hydrothermal vent and seep environments.

They can use oxygen or nitrate as electron acceptors, with growth optima around 28–32°C and neutral pH.

Ecology and distribution: Siocessus species are found in diffuse flow zones around hydrothermal vents and cold seeps, often in association with macrofauna such as tubeworms and bivalves. They contribute to local sulfur cycling and may form part of microbial mats on vent chimneys.
