Singlechannel refers to a system, device, or dataset that uses a single signal path, channel, or data stream. The term is used across fields to distinguish one-channel implementations from multi-channel designs that operate on several parallel channels. In practice, a singlechannel configuration emphasizes simplicity, lower cost, and smaller footprint, but may limit information capacity and redundancy compared with multi-channel approaches.

In audio and music, a singlechannel setup typically means mono sound, where all audio signals are combined into one channel. Mono can be produced by a single microphone or by summing multiple sources. It contrasts with stereo or higher-channel formats, which provide spatial imaging and separation but require more bandwidth and processing.

In telecommunications and data networks, a single channel represents one independent path for voice or data. For example, a single 64 kbps channel (known as a DS0 in traditional digital hierarchies) carries one voice call or a data stream. Modern networks multiplex many DS0 channels to form higher-capacity links, but individual channels can still be referenced as singlechannel units.

In sensing and data acquisition, a singlechannel system collects one variable from one sensor. This simplicity reduces cost and complexity but limits the ability to analyze relationships among multiple measurements or to obtain spatial information.
