Simptomatik, also referred to as symptomatology, is the field within medicine concerned with the description, classification, and interpretation of symptoms associated with diseases and other health conditions. It focuses on the signs reported by patients and observed by clinicians, as well as the patterns and clusters these signs form over time. The term derives from Greek roots meaning a collection of observable signs and their study.

In practice, simptomatik involves documenting which symptoms occur, their onset and progression, severity, and how they interact with one another. Clinicians use symptomatology to guide initial assessment, develop differential diagnoses, and monitor response to treatment. It also supports the formulation of syndromic diagnoses—groupings of symptoms that tend to occur together in specific conditions—without requiring a confirmed cause.

Symptomatology is used across medical specialties, from infectious diseases to neurology and psychiatry. It complements etiological and pathophysiological information by providing a practical description of the patient’s experience and the observable clinical picture. Researchers study symptom clusters, variability, and measurement through standardized scales to quantify burden and track outcomes.

Limitations include subjectivity and overlap between conditions, as different diseases may produce similar symptom patterns. Therefore, symptomatology is typically integrated with physical examination, laboratory findings, and imaging to arrive at a diagnosis and treatment plan.
