Silyliryhmä is a term used in Finnish chemistry to refer to the silyl group. A silyl group is a functional group consisting of silicon atom bonded to three organic or inorganic radicals. The general formula for a silyl group is -SiR3, where R represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, or an alkyl, aryl, or alkoxy group.

Silyl groups are important in organic synthesis and materials science. In organic synthesis, they are commonly used as protecting groups for alcohols, amines, and carboxylic acids. This protection is achieved by reacting the functional group with a silyl halide, such as trimethylsilyl chloride or tert-butyldimethylsilyl chloride, in the presence of a base. The silyl ether, silyl amine, or silyl ester formed is stable under a variety of reaction conditions but can be easily removed later by treatment with acid or fluoride ions.

In materials science, silicon-containing polymers, known as silicones or polysiloxanes, are formed from repeating silyl units. These polymers exhibit unique properties such as thermal stability, flexibility, and water repellency, making them useful in a wide range of applications, including sealants, lubricants, and medical implants. The structure and reactivity of silyl groups can be tailored by changing the nature of the R substituents, allowing for the design of specialized molecules and materials with specific properties.
