Silmävuodot, often referred to as eye bleeding, is a phenomenon where blood appears in or around the eye. This can manifest in various ways, from a visible trickle of blood from the eye itself to blood in the white part of the eye (conjunctiva) or even within the deeper structures of the eye.

The causes of silmävuodot are diverse and range from minor irritations to serious medical conditions. Trauma to the eye, such as a direct blow or a scratch to the cornea, is a common cause of conjunctival hemorrhage, where a blood vessel on the surface breaks and bleeds. In this case, the bleeding is typically confined to the conjunctiva and appears as a bright red patch.

More serious causes can involve bleeding within the eye's internal structures. Hyphema refers to blood in the anterior chamber, the space between the cornea and the iris. This can result from blunt force trauma or certain medical procedures and can significantly impair vision. Vitreous hemorrhage, bleeding into the vitreous humor (the gel-like substance filling the back of the eye), is another serious condition. Causes include diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears or detachments, and trauma.

Other potential causes include high blood pressure, blood clotting disorders, certain medications like blood thinners, and infections. In some rare instances, bleeding from the eye can be a symptom of more systemic diseases.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough eye examination by a healthcare professional, including assessment of vision and the extent of bleeding. Treatment depends entirely on the underlying cause. Mild conjunctival hemorrhages often resolve on their own without treatment. However, internal eye bleeding requires prompt medical attention to prevent vision loss and manage the underlying condition.
