This often involves using a phoropter to present different lens combinations to the patient.

The optometrist or ophthalmologist will also examine the external parts of the eye and use specialized equipment, like a slit lamp, to view the internal structures, including the retina, optic nerve, and lens, for any signs of disease such as glaucoma, cataracts, or macular degeneration.
