This is distinct from alphabetic systems, where symbols represent individual sounds (phonemes), and logographic systems, where symbols represent entire words or morphemes. In a syllabic system, the basic unit of writing is the syllable, which is a unit of pronunciation consisting of a vowel alone or a vowel with one or more consonants.

Many syllabic systems exist or have existed throughout history. Japanese Kana, specifically Hiragana and Katakana, are prominent examples of modern syllabaries. Each Kana character represents a distinct mora, which is often equivalent to a syllable in pronunciation, though there are some finer distinctions. Ancient writing systems like the Linear B script of Mycenaean Greece and the Cherokee syllabary developed by Sequoyah are also notable examples. The Korean Hangul, while often described as an alphabet, is technically an alphasyllabary, where letters representing consonants and vowels are grouped together to form syllable blocks.

The advantages of syllabaries include a relatively manageable number of characters compared to logographic systems, as the number of possible syllables is significantly less than the number of words. However, they can be less efficient than alphabetic systems for languages with a large inventory of distinct syllables, potentially requiring more symbols to represent all possibilities. The structure of a language heavily influences the suitability and design of its syllabic system.
