Sikiönmuodostus, also known as embryogenesis, is the process by which an embryo develops from the earliest stages of fertilization to the formation of recognizable fetal structures. This complex journey begins with the fusion of a sperm and an egg to form a zygote, a single cell that contains the complete genetic blueprint for a new organism. The zygote undergoes rapid cell division through a process called cleavage, increasing the number of cells and forming a ball-like structure known as a morula.

As cell division continues, the morula develops into a blastocyst, which has an inner cell mass that will eventually form the embryo itself, and an outer layer called the trophoblast, which will contribute to the placenta. The blastocyst then implants into the uterine wall, marking the beginning of the embryonic period. Following implantation, the cells of the inner cell mass differentiate into three primary germ layers: the ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm.

Each of these germ layers gives rise to specific tissues and organs. The ectoderm forms the nervous system, skin, and sensory organs. The mesoderm develops into muscles, bones, the circulatory system, and reproductive organs. The endoderm differentiates into the lining of the digestive tract, respiratory system, and various glands. During this critical period, the basic body plan is established, and the foundations for all major organ systems are laid. This intricate process of cell differentiation, migration, and organization ultimately leads to the formation of a recognizable embryo, paving the way for further fetal development.
