Siittiöillä, also known as spermatozoa, are the male reproductive cells in many organisms, including humans. They are microscopic, motile cells that play a crucial role in sexual reproduction by delivering the male genetic material to the female ovum.

The structure of a mammalian sperm cell is highly specialized for its function. It typically consists of a head, midpiece, and tail. The head contains the nucleus, which houses the haploid set of chromosomes (half the genetic material of the parent organism). It also contains the acrosome, a cap-like structure filled with enzymes essential for penetrating the egg's outer layers. The midpiece is packed with mitochondria, the powerhouses of the cell, providing the energy needed for the tail's movement. The tail, or flagellum, is a whip-like appendage that propels the sperm through the female reproductive tract towards the ovum.

Sperm production, known as spermatogenesis, occurs in the testes. This complex process begins with precursor cells that undergo division and differentiation over a period of time. Mature sperm are then stored in the epididymis, where they gain motility. During ejaculation, sperm are mixed with seminal fluid, forming semen, which is then deposited into the female reproductive tract. Fertilization occurs when a sperm successfully fuses with an ovum, restoring the diploid number of chromosomes and initiating the development of a new organism. The viability and motility of sperm are influenced by various factors, including genetics, health, and environmental conditions.
