Siipimoottori, commonly known in English as a turbofan engine, is a type of jet engine that is widely used in modern aircraft. It consists of a fan at the front, which draws in a large volume of air. A significant portion of this air bypasses the core of the engine, contributing to thrust. The remaining air enters the core, where it is compressed, mixed with fuel, and ignited. The resulting hot gases are expelled through the rear, generating thrust.

The primary advantage of a turbofan engine over older turbojet designs is its improved fuel efficiency, particularly at subsonic speeds. The large bypass air contributes significantly to thrust, making the engine quieter and more economical. The bypass ratio, which is the ratio of the mass of air bypassing the core to the mass of air passing through the core, is a key characteristic of turbofan engines. High-bypass turbofans, with higher bypass ratios, are typically used for commercial airliners, while low-bypass turbofans are often found in military aircraft where speed and maneuverability are prioritized.

Turbofan engines are complex pieces of engineering, involving multiple stages of compressors and turbines within the core. The fan itself is driven by the low-pressure turbine at the rear of the engine. The continuous cycle of air intake, combustion, and exhaust makes the turbofan a powerful and efficient propulsion system. They are the dominant engine type for most passenger aircraft and many military planes due to their balance of performance, efficiency, and noise reduction.
