Signaalitöötlöinnin is the Estonian term for signal processing. It is a scientific discipline that deals with the analysis, modification, and synthesis of signals. Signals are functions that convey information about a phenomenon, such as sound waves, images, radio waves, or physiological measurements. Signal processing techniques are used to extract meaningful information from these signals, to improve their quality, or to generate new signals with desired characteristics.

Analog signal processing deals with continuous-time signals and uses analog circuits and components. Digital signal processing, which is more prevalent today, deals with discrete-time signals that have been sampled and quantized. This allows for the use of powerful computational methods and algorithms implemented on digital hardware like microprocessors and specialized digital signal processors (DSPs).

Key concepts in signal processing include sampling, quantization, filtering, Fourier transforms, and correlation. Sampling converts a continuous-time signal into a discrete-time signal by taking measurements at regular intervals. Quantization approximates the sampled values to a finite set of levels. Filtering is used to remove unwanted components from a signal or to enhance specific features. Fourier transforms decompose a signal into its constituent frequencies, providing insights into its spectral content. Correlation measures the similarity between two signals.

Signal processing finds applications in a vast array of fields, including telecommunications, audio and video processing, medical imaging, radar and sonar systems, control systems, and scientific research. For instance, it is crucial for compressing audio and video files, removing noise from images, detecting diseases from medical scans, and enabling wireless communication.
