A sicklebar is a component used in certain cutting machines, most notably mowers and header assemblies on combines and harvesters. It consists of a long bar fitted with multiple knife sections that move in a reciprocating fashion against a stationary bed knife. The motion is driven by a gear train or hydraulic mechanism from the machine’s power source, producing a rhythmic cutting action as the bar travels back and forth. When the bar and bed knife meet, plant material is sheared close to the ground, allowing crops to be collected or processed downstream.

Design-wise, the sicklebar is made up of individual knife sections, each mounted on the bar and designed to be replaceable. The stationary bed knife provides the opposing edge, creating a shearing action rather than a purely sawing cut. Guards and divider components along the bar guide the crop toward the knives and protect the operator. Bar length and knife configuration vary to match different header widths and crop types.

Applications are found in agricultural equipment such as sickle bar mowers, hay cutters, and the headers of some combine harvesters. Sicklebars are favored for clean, low-stress cuts on grasses, cereals, and other herbaceous crops, particularly in light or uneven terrain. They are less common in modern high-acreage systems that favor rotary cutters, though they remain in use for certain small farms, specialty crops, and in regions where their repairability and simplicity are advantageous.

Maintenance involves keeping knives sharp and properly tensioned, replacing worn or damaged knife sections, and ensuring correct alignment with the bed knife. Regular lubrication and inspection of guards, wear parts, and drive linkages help prevent clogging and damage.
