In many depictions, shrinking is reversible and comes with changes in perception, density, and interaction with the surrounding environment. The term is often used in contrast to amplifiers or enlargers and may serve as a plot device to explore scale-dependent challenges.

In fiction, shrinkers appear as handheld rays, laboratory contraptions, or magically invoked powers. The underlying mechanics vary widely: some stories treat shrinkage as simple spatial compression; others invoke alternate dimensions, altered physics, or nanotechnological processes.
