shimba
Shimba is the name of the Shimba Hills National Reserve located in Kwale County, Kenya. The reserve covers about 5,500 hectares of coastal forest and miombo woodland. It lies between the Indian Ocean and the coastal plain and is part of Kenya's largest national park system. The area is known for its diverse wildlife, including elephants, blackbucks, waterbuck, chinkara, and several antelope species. Bird enthusiasts visit Shimba for its rich avifauna, home to both migratory and resident species such as the endangered Abbott's duiker. The landscape features rocky outcrops, ravines, and several streams providing habitat for crocodiles and hippos. Regular patrolling and community involvement have helped reduce poaching and preserve habitat. The reserve is also a site for ecological research, offering insights into forest fragmentation and species connectivity. Visitor facilities include guided walks, a visitor center, and scenic viewpoints overlooking Cape Coast. Shimba Hills has been designated a protected area since 1972 and is managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service. Its conservation status underscores the importance of preserving Kenya's coastal biodiversity.
