The war occurred between the Satsuma Domain and the Chōshū Domain, two of the most powerful and influential domains in the country at the time. The conflict began in 1868 when the Satsuma Domain, led by Saigō Takamori, sought to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate and restore imperial rule. The Chōshū Domain, led by Ōkubo Toshimichi, initially supported the shogunate but later joined the Satsuma Domain in their rebellion.
