servasid

Servasid is a proposed open standard for persistent, globally unique identifiers assigned to software services within distributed architectures. The goal is to decouple service consumers from concrete endpoints by providing a stable identifier that can be resolved to the current location and metadata of a service, even as endpoints change due to deployment, scaling, or multi-cloud deployments. The term combines “service” and “SID” (service identifier).

In a servasid system, each service is assigned a hierarchical identifier that encodes organization, service domain, version, and optionally region or environment. A service registry or resolver stores mappings from servasid to endpoint data, including protocol, version, health status, and metadata such as security requirements. Clients resolve a servasid through a configurable resolver, which may query a registry, use a cached copy, or consult federated registries across domains. The identifiers are designed to be length-conscious and URL-friendly, suitable for use in logs, certificates, and API calls.

Implementation considerations include governance (who may mint identifiers, how to deprecate or rotate IDs), privacy (exposure of internal structure), and security (authenticating resolvers, preventing spoofing). Benefits include reduced coupling, easier service discovery across heterogeneous environments, and improved auditability. Drawbacks include added complexity, potential privacy risks, and the need for robust resolution infrastructure.

As of now, servasid remains a conceptual construct used in theoretical discussions and limited prototype deployments; it has not been adopted as a formal standard by major standards bodies. It is closely related to persistent identifiers, URNs, service registries, and metadata-driven service discovery.
