Serial ports can operate at different baud rates, which is the rate at which data is transmitted. Common baud rates include 9600, 19200, and 115200 bits per second. The baud rate must be set to the same value on both the computer and the peripheral device for successful communication.

Serial ports have largely been replaced by USB ports in modern computers, as USB offers faster data transfer rates and supports more devices. However, serial ports are still used in some industrial and scientific applications, as well as in legacy systems that require serial communication.
