Separatistas are individuals or groups that advocate for separating a region from a sovereign state in order to form an independent country or to join another state. Movements labeled as separatist often arise from perceived ethnic, linguistic, cultural, historical, or political differences, as well as grievances over governance, rights, or resources. They can pursue a wide range of objectives, from full independence to greater regional autonomy within the existing state.

Separatism is distinct from demands for greater autonomy or federal arrangements, although positions can blur in practice. Some movements seek nonviolent means such as political campaigning, negotiations, or referendums; others have used or incorporated violent tactics, including insurgency or terrorism. The legitimacy and popularity of separatist efforts vary over time and depend on circumstances, governance, and international attention.

Legal and political context is complex. International law endorses the principle of self-determination but does not grant an unconditional right to unilateral secession. Outcomes depend on domestic constitutional processes, negotiations, and, in some cases, international mediation. Secessionist movements can lead to peaceful redrawing of borders or to prolonged conflicts, economic disruption, and regional instability if unresolved.

Notable examples include the Catalan independence movement in Spain; the Scotland and Quebec movements in the United Kingdom and Canada, respectively; Kurdish movements across Turkey, Iraq, Syria, and Iran; and the Tamil separatist movement in Sri Lanka. East Timor's path to independence from Indonesia (achieved in 2002) is often cited as a successful case of secession following referential processes and international support.
