Seostyyppejä refers to different classifications or categories of metal alloys. Alloys are mixtures of two or more metallic elements, or a metallic element and one or more non-metallic elements. The way these elements are combined and their relative proportions determine the properties of the resulting alloy.

One common way to categorize alloys is by their primary constituent element. For example, ferrous alloys are based on iron, such as steel and cast iron. Non-ferrous alloys do not contain iron as their main component. Examples include aluminum alloys, copper alloys (like brass and bronze), titanium alloys, and nickel alloys.

Another classification is based on their microstructure or how the elements are bonded. Solid solution alloys occur when the solute atoms are dispersed within the solvent lattice without forming a new crystal structure. Examples include brass (copper-zinc) and stainless steel (iron-chromium). Intermetallic compounds form distinct chemical compounds with fixed or variable stoichiometry, possessing their own crystal structures. Examples include magnesium-aluminum alloys.

Alloys can also be categorized by their intended application or by specific properties they exhibit. For instance, heat-treatable alloys can have their mechanical properties significantly altered by heat treatment processes like quenching and tempering. High-strength alloys are designed for applications requiring exceptional mechanical resistance. Similarly, alloys can be classified as corrosion-resistant, refractory (high melting point), or conductive, depending on their specialized functions. The choice of alloy type is crucial for determining the suitability of a material for a particular engineering purpose.
