Semibyte is a term sometimes used to refer to a group of four bits, also known as a nibble. In digital electronics and computer science, a bit is the smallest unit of data, representing a binary value of either 0 or 1. A byte traditionally consists of eight bits. Therefore, a semibyte, or nibble, represents half of a byte.

This unit of four bits is significant because it can represent 16 different values (2^4 = 16). These values correspond to the hexadecimal digits 0 through 9 and the letters A through F. This makes nibbles particularly useful for representing hexadecimal numbers, which are commonly used in computing for memory addresses, color codes, and other data representations. For instance, a single byte can be conveniently represented by two nibbles.

The concept of a semibyte or nibble simplifies certain data manipulation and transmission tasks. For example, when working with character encoding schemes like ASCII, each character is represented by a byte, which can be easily broken down into two nibbles for processing or display. While not as frequently used as the term "byte," "semibyte" and "nibble" serve to describe this fundamental four-bit grouping within the broader context of digital information.
