Sekundærmetabolismen refers to the diverse array of organic compounds produced by organisms, particularly plants, fungi, and microorganisms, that are not directly involved in the normal growth, development, or reproduction of the organism. Unlike primary metabolites, which are essential for basic life processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, and nutrient assimilation, secondary metabolites serve a variety of ecological roles. These roles can include defense against herbivores and pathogens, attraction of pollinators and seed dispersers, and competition with other organisms.

The chemical structures of secondary metabolites are highly varied and often complex, encompassing major classes such as alkaloids, terpenoids, phenolics, and polyketides. For example, alkaloids are nitrogen-containing compounds like caffeine and nicotine, while terpenoids include essential oils and steroids. Phenolics, such as flavonoids and tannins, are characterized by aromatic rings. Polyketides can form a wide range of structures, including some antibiotics.

These compounds are often produced in specific tissues or at particular developmental stages and their production can be triggered by environmental stresses. Humans have long utilized secondary metabolites for medicinal purposes, as flavorings, fragrances, and dyes. Research continues to uncover new secondary metabolites and their potential applications in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and industry. While not essential for immediate survival, secondary metabolism plays a crucial role in an organism's long-term survival and interaction with its environment.
