Sekundærinfeksjoner, also known as secondary infections, occur when a person's immune system is weakened by an initial illness or condition, making them susceptible to a new, unrelated infection. This initial illness can be viral, bacterial, fungal, or parasitic, and it compromises the body's ability to fight off other pathogens.

For example, a common cold, which is a viral infection, can weaken the respiratory system. This can then lead to a secondary bacterial infection, such as sinusitis or bronchitis, where bacteria take advantage of the weakened defenses. Similarly, individuals with conditions like HIV/AIDS, cancer, or those undergoing chemotherapy have compromised immune systems, making them prone to a wide range of secondary infections, including opportunistic infections that would typically not affect healthy individuals.

The symptoms of a secondary infection can be similar to or different from the primary illness and often exacerbate the overall condition. Treatment for secondary infections typically involves addressing the specific pathogen causing the new infection, which might require antibiotics for bacterial infections, antifungals for fungal infections, or antiviral medications for viral infections, in addition to managing the primary condition. Prevention often focuses on maintaining a strong immune system and prompt treatment of initial illnesses.
