Sekundääripeilit, or secondary mirrors, are essential optical components in many reflecting telescopes and other optical instruments. Their primary function is to redirect light that has been collected by the main mirror, or primary mirror, towards an eyepiece or detector. Without a secondary mirror, the light would continue to travel within the telescope tube and would not be conveniently accessible for observation.

In a typical Newtonian telescope, the secondary mirror is flat and angled to reflect the converging light beam from the primary mirror out to the side of the telescope tube, where the eyepiece is located. This design allows for a compact and efficient telescope. Other telescope designs, like Cassegrain and its variants, use a curved secondary mirror. This curved secondary mirror reflects the light back down through a hole in the center of the primary mirror, allowing for a longer focal length in a shorter physical tube.

The size, shape, and precise positioning of the secondary mirror are critical for achieving a clear and sharp image. Any imperfections or misalignment can introduce optical aberrations, degrading the quality of the observed image. The coatings on the surface of the secondary mirror are also important, typically being highly reflective to minimize light loss. In advanced astronomical instruments, secondary mirrors may also be actively controlled to correct for atmospheric distortions or to perform specific optical functions.
