The size of sediment particles is a primary classification criterion. It ranges from boulders and cobbles, which are large fragments, down to clay, which are microscopic particles. The Wentworth scale is a commonly used system for categorizing sediment particle sizes, defining distinct classes such as gravel, sand, silt, and clay based on their diameter. Grain shape is another important characteristic, often described as rounded, sub-rounded, sub-angular, or angular, which provides clues about the distance and energy of transport.

The composition of sediment particles is equally diverse. They can be fragments of pre-existing rocks, such as quartz, feldspar, or rock fragments, or they can be biogenic, formed from the remains of organisms like shells or plant material. Chemical precipitates, such as calcite or halite, also form sediment particles. The study of sediment particles, or sedimentology, is essential for understanding Earth's history, interpreting past environments, and assessing present-day geological hazards and resources.
