Sedimentaci is the Czech term for sedimentation, the process by which particulate matter settles out of a fluid and accumulates as a layer of sediment. It occurs when gravity or other forces overcome the upward or lateral transport of particles suspended in water, air or other fluids. The rate and character of sedimentation depend on particle size, shape and density, fluid viscosity and flow conditions; fine particles may remain suspended longer or form flocs through cohesive or biological processes.

In natural environments sedimentation shapes riverbeds, lakes, deltas and continental shelves, producing stratified deposits that record environmental and climatic changes. Sedimentary structures such as graded bedding, laminations and cross-bedding arise from variations in transport and settling conditions. Sedimentation also affects estuaries and reservoirs by altering channel morphology and reducing storage capacity.

In engineering and industry, sedimentation is harnessed in water and wastewater treatment, mining, and oil and gas operations to separate solids from liquids using settling tanks, clarifiers and thickeners. Quantitative descriptions often use settling velocity models (for example Stokes’ law for small particles in laminar flow) and empirical or numerical approaches for complex systems.

Understanding sedimentation is important for ecosystem management, infrastructure design, pollution control and interpreting the geological record.
