Sedimentära refers to sedimentary rocks, a major class of rocks that are formed from the accumulation or deposition of mineral or organic particles at the Earth's surface. These particles, known as sediment, are derived from the weathering and erosion of pre-existing rocks, or from biological activity, or from chemical precipitation.

The process of sediment formation begins with the breakdown of rocks through physical or chemical weathering. These broken-down pieces, or sediment, are then transported by agents like wind, water, or ice. Over time, this transported sediment settles in layers, often in bodies of water such as oceans, lakes, and rivers, or on land in basins.

As more sediment accumulates, the lower layers are subjected to increasing pressure from the weight of the overlying material. This pressure, along with the presence of groundwater, can lead to cementation and compaction, processes collectively known as lithification. Lithification transforms the loose sediment into solid sedimentary rock.

Sedimentary rocks are categorized into three main types based on their origin: clastic, chemical, and organic. Clastic sedimentary rocks, like sandstone and shale, are formed from fragments of other rocks. Chemical sedimentary rocks, such as rock salt and limestone, precipitate from solutions. Organic sedimentary rocks, like coal and some limestones, are formed from the accumulation of organic matter.

Sedimentary rocks are significant because they often preserve evidence of past environments, including fossils, and are important sources of natural resources like coal, oil, and natural gas. They cover about 75% of the Earth's land surface.
