Scoters are a group of diving ducks belonging to the genus Melanitta. There are three species of scoter: the Common Scoter, Surf Scoter, and Black Scoter. These ducks are primarily found in the northern hemisphere, with their breeding grounds in Arctic and subarctic regions and wintering grounds in temperate coastal areas.

Common Scoters are medium-sized ducks with mostly black plumage, though males can have distinctive white patches on their foreheads and cheeks. Surf Scoters are also medium-sized, with males exhibiting a striking white forehead patch and a brightly colored bill. Black Scoters are similar to Common Scoters but are entirely black, lacking any white markings.

Scoters are diving ducks, meaning they forage underwater for food, which typically consists of mollusks, crustaceans, and aquatic insects. They are strong swimmers and can dive to considerable depths. Their bills are adapted for their diet, often being stout and knobbed.

These ducks are often seen in large flocks, especially during migration and in their wintering areas. They prefer open water, including bays, estuaries, and the open sea. Their breeding habits involve nesting in secluded areas near water, typically on the ground. Scoters are a popular quarry for waterfowl hunters in some regions.
