Sclerozó is a Czech term that translates to sclerosis in English. Sclerosis, in a medical context, refers to the hardening or thickening of a tissue or organ. This hardening is typically caused by an overgrowth of fibrous connective tissue, a process known as fibrosis. When this occurs in specific organs, it can lead to impaired function.

The most well-known condition associated with sclerosis is multiple sclerosis (MS). In multiple sclerosis, the myelin sheath, a protective covering around nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord, is damaged and replaced by scar tissue. This scarring disrupts the transmission of nerve signals, leading to a wide range of neurological symptoms.

However, sclerosis is not limited to the nervous system. For example, arterial sclerosis, commonly known as hardening of the arteries, is a condition where the artery walls become thick and stiff, often due to the buildup of plaque. Liver cirrhosis is another form of sclerosis, where healthy liver tissue is replaced by scar tissue, hindering the liver's ability to function properly. Scleroderma is a group of autoimmune diseases that cause hardening and tightening of the skin and connective tissues. The specific cause and manifestation of sclerosis depend heavily on the affected organ or tissue. Diagnosis and treatment vary accordingly.
