Schaaldeeltjes, literally “scale particles,” is a Dutch term used in several scientific domains to denote particles that define or influence the scale at which a system is observed or described. The expression is not a formal technical term with a single, universal definition; its meaning differs by context, but it often refers to particles whose known size or properties establish a reference frame for measurements, visualizations, or models.

In microscopy and imaging, schaaldeeltjes are calibration standards, typically microspheres of known diameter (for example polystyrene or silica beads ranging from tens of nanometers to a few micrometers). They are used to set scale bars, verify magnification, and ensure comparability between instruments and experiments.
