Scanneras are a type of data acquisition device. They are used to capture visual information from a physical document or object and convert it into a digital format. This digital representation can then be stored, processed, and shared electronically.

There are various types of scanners, each designed for specific applications. Flatbed scanners are common for scanning documents, photos, and books. They feature a glass plate onto which the item to be scanned is placed. Sheet-fed scanners, also known as document scanners, are designed for high-volume document scanning and typically have an automatic document feeder. Handheld scanners are portable and can be moved across the surface of an object, useful for scanning irregular shapes or in situations where a flatbed scanner is impractical.

The scanning process involves illuminating the item and using a sensor, often a charge-coupled device (CCD) or a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) sensor, to detect the reflected light. This light information is then converted into electrical signals and processed by software to create a digital image file. Common file formats include JPEG, PNG, and TIFF.

Scanners play a crucial role in many fields, including offices for digitizing paperwork, libraries for archiving historical documents, graphic design for importing images, and healthcare for converting medical records into digital formats. The resolution of a scanner, measured in dots per inch (dpi), determines the level of detail in the captured image. Higher dpi generally results in a more detailed but larger file size.
