Savuhälytin, known in English as a smoke alarm or smoke detector, is a safety device that detects the presence of smoke, often as an indicator of fire. When smoke is detected, the device emits a loud audible alarm to alert occupants of a potential danger, giving them time to evacuate.

There are two primary types of smoke detection technology: ionization and photoelectric. Ionization alarms are more responsive to fast-flaming fires, which produce smaller smoke particles. Dual-sensor alarms, which combine both technologies, offer broader protection.

Many modern smoke alarms are interconnected, meaning if one alarm detects smoke, all connected alarms will sound, increasing the likelihood that everyone in the building hears the alert.

Proper placement of smoke alarms is essential for effective detection. They should be installed on every level of a home, inside each bedroom, and outside sleeping areas. Alarms should be mounted on the ceiling or high on a wall. Regular maintenance, including dusting and testing, is recommended to keep them in good working order and to ensure the safety of those within the premises.
