Sateenpisaroita is the Finnish term for the vibrant, multi‑colored arc that appears in the sky when sunlight is refracted, reflected and dispersed by water droplets. The phenomenon, commonly referred to as a rainbow in English, has been studied extensively in atmospheric physics as a classic example of light dispersion.

The arc is formed when light enters a droplet, bends, reflects off the back of the droplet and emerges, bending again before reaching the observer. The wavelength of visible light ranges from about 400 nanometers (violet) to 700 nanometers (red), and this dispersion gives rise to the familiar sequence of colors. The most common angle between the incoming sunlight, the observer, and the droplet is around 42 degrees for the primary rainbow; a secondary rainbow appears at about 51 degrees, usually with reversed color order.

Sateenpisaroita has a long history in Finnish folklore and mythology, where it is often associated with hope, luck, and the promise of good fortune. Similar symbolism appears in many other cultures, where rainbows are seen as bridges between worlds or as markers of divine promise. Modern scientific accounts of the rainbow blend classical optics with contemporary studies of atmospheric conditions, such as droplet size and humidity. In meteorology, the appearance or absence of a rainbow can indicate certain weather patterns, although the phenomenon itself is purely optical.
