Sappitiehyin refers to the network of ducts that transport bile from the liver and gallbladder to the small intestine. Bile is a digestive fluid produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder, which aids in the digestion of fats. The system consists of both intrahepatic bile ducts, which are located within the liver, and extrahepatic bile ducts, which are outside the liver.

The main extrahepatic ducts include the common hepatic duct, which collects bile from the liver, and the cystic duct, which connects the gallbladder to the common hepatic duct. These two ducts merge to form the common bile duct. The common bile duct then joins with the main pancreatic duct before emptying into the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine, through a muscular valve called the sphincter of Oddi.

Diseases affecting the sappitiehyin can lead to various health problems. Gallstones, which are hardened deposits of digestive fluid, are a common cause of obstruction in the bile ducts. This obstruction can lead to pain, inflammation (cholecystitis), and infection (cholangitis). Other conditions like primary biliary cholangitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, and bile duct cancer can also affect the integrity and function of these crucial ducts. Diagnosis often involves imaging techniques such as ultrasound, CT scans, MRI, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Treatment depends on the underlying cause and can range from medication and lifestyle changes to surgical procedures like cholecystectomy or bile duct repair.
