Sanseopptaket is a Norwegian term used in discussions of sensory processing to describe the uptake and initial encoding of sensory information by biological systems. The word combines sanse (sense) and opptak (uptake). In common usage, it refers to the early stage of perception, before higher-level interpretation, when receptors detect stimuli and transduce them into neural signals that are conveyed toward the brain.

The concept covers multiple modalities, including vision, audition, somatosensation, olfaction and gustation. Mechanistically, sanseopptaket begins with sensory receptors that respond to physical or chemical stimuli and convert them into electrical signals through transduction. These signals travel via peripheral nerves and relay stations such as the thalamus to primary sensory cortices, where basic features like light intensity, frequency, or chemical concentration are encoded. Multisensory integration and higher cognitive processing occur downstream of the initial uptake.

In research and applied contexts, the term is used to emphasize the input side of perception, distinguishing immediate sensory capture from later interpretation, attention, and decision-making. It has relevance for fields such as neuroscience education, human–computer interaction, and accessibility design, where clear and salient sensory input can affect perceptual outcomes.
