Scholarly and oral histories place the origin of sanngirni in the early medieval period of Thalenor, with first documented references appearing in traders’ accounts from around the 15th century. Practices and symbolism. The festival centers on a procession to the communal gathering place, where participants wear cedar foliage and ochre pigments. A lead chanter performs call-and-response with a chorus, guiding a sequence of drums, flutes, and clapping.
