Samtykkets is the possessive form of samtykke, meaning the voluntary and informed agreement to participate in an activity or to allow something to occur. In Norwegian and other Scandinavian texts, samtykkets denotes the scope, conditions and validity of such consent in legal, medical and ethical contexts.

In health care, informed consent is a central requirement. It relies on adequate information, understanding, voluntariness and the patient’s competence. Consent must be specific to the procedure or data processing and can be revoked at any time. Norwegian law, including the pasient- og brukerrettighetsloven and the helsepersonelloven, governs how samtykke is obtained and documented. In research, participants must give informed consent to take part and to use data, with disclosures about risks, benefits and alternatives.

In criminal and civil law, consent can affect liability and legality. For example, sexual consent has legal significance, and contracts depend on voluntary agreement without coercion or misrepresentation. The validity of samtykkets may depend on capacity, freedom from duress and sufficient information.

For data processing and digital services, consent is a key basis for lawful processing. It must be freely given, specific, informed and revocable; users should be able to withdraw consent easily, and consent may be time-limited or granular.

Challenges include implicit or assumed consent, information overload, and power imbalances. The term samtykkets is frequently used in statutory language to refer to the consent’s scope, obligations and limits.
