Sameindafræði is the study of isomers, which are molecules that have the same chemical formula but different structural formulas. This means that isomers are made up of the same atoms, arranged in different ways. These differences in arrangement can lead to significant variations in the physical and chemical properties of the isomers, even though they share the same molecular formula.

There are several types of isomerism. Structural isomerism, also known as constitutional isomerism, occurs when molecules have the same molecular formula but a different connectivity of atoms. This means the atoms are bonded together in a different order. For example, butane and isobutane (or 2-methylpropane) both have the molecular formula C4H10, but their carbon skeletons are arranged differently.

Stereoisomerism, on the other hand, occurs when molecules have the same molecular formula and the same connectivity of atoms, but differ in the three-dimensional arrangement of their atoms in space. Within stereoisomerism, there are further classifications such as enantiomers and diastereomers. Enantiomers are stereoisomers that are non-superimposable mirror images of each other, much like left and right hands. Diastereomers are stereoisomers that are not mirror images of each other. Geometric isomerism, a type of stereoisomerism, arises due to restricted rotation around a chemical bond, often seen in alkenes where substituents can be on the same side (cis) or opposite sides (trans) of the double bond.

Understanding isomerism is crucial in many areas of chemistry, including organic chemistry, biochemistry, and pharmacology, as different isomers can have vastly different biological activities or reactivities.
