Salaliittou refers to the concept of conspiracy in Finnish. The term has been widely used in popular discourse and media to describe allegations of covert plots and schemes.

Historically, the term gained prominence during the Cold War era, particularly in the 1970s and 1980s. It was often associated with investigative reporting and publications that aimed to expose government, military, and other institutions' secret activities.

In Finland, the first major salaliittou scandal emerged in the early 1970s, following the publication of a book titled "Salakuljetettu". The book alleged that a chemical plant in the southwestern town of Porvoo had been secretly involved in a conspiracy to produce mustard gas. Although the allegations were later found to be largely unfounded, they sparked public concern and led to increased scrutiny of industrial practices.

The salaliittou phenomenon became even more prevalent in the 1990s and 2000s, with investigations and publications touching on topics such as espionage, government corruption, and environmental scandals. The rise of the internet and tabloid media further contributed to the spread of conspiracy theories, turning salaliittou into a fully-fledged cultural phenomenon.
