Safeners are chemical additives used in crop protection to increase the tolerance of selected crops to herbicides. They are applied together with herbicides or as seed treatments to reduce crop injury while preserving weed control. Safeners are sometimes referred to as antidotes because they boost the plant’s ability to withstand herbicide exposure.

Mechanism: Safeners work by activating the crop’s detoxification system. They induce enzymes such as cytochrome P450 monooxygenases, glutathione S-transferases, and UDP-glucosyltransferases that metabolize and sequester herbicides into less harmful forms. This metabolic acceleration is usually selective for certain crops, giving cereals and other crops a higher tolerance than weeds.

Applications: Safeners are used with a range of herbicides that are effective against weeds but can injure sensitive crops. They are commonly incorporated into premixed formulations or applied as seed coatings or foliar sprays in cereal production, including wheat, barley, and rice, among others. The goal is to expand the selectivity window of a herbicide.

Limitations: Benefits vary by crop variety and environment. Not all crops respond to a given safener, and safeners do not make crops invulnerable to all herbicides or all weed species. Interaction with other agrochemicals and regulatory status can influence use and labeling.
